0404.29-Movie to film in
Timmins [Daily
Press]:
Timmins residents will have an opportunity to appear
in a made-for-TV movie. A two-hour movie chronicling the life of Shania
Twain will be shot, in part, in Timmins this summer. “We were commissioned
by the CBC to make this film,” said Laszlo Barna, the film’s executive
producer at Barna-Alper Productions in Toronto. More than $3 million will
be spent producing the film, which will be shot, for the most part, in
Timmins and Sudbury, Barna said. A crew of about 100 people will be on
hand for the duration of the filming. We’d likely come in late-July to
scout the area and start shooting in late August. And we’ll be done,
hopefully, by the time the snow flies.” Excitement is mounting at the
studio about the project. “We are going to try and tell the story of this
hugely talented young woman in a way that doesn’t stereotype her,” he
said. “The feeling we are going leave the viewers with is the message of
her life, that you can achieve anything you want to.” The story will be
reminiscent of the movie Coal Miner’s Daughter, a film about country
singer Loretta Lynn’s rise to stardom.

Arena Twain and her nine-piece band gave a performance that combined
big-arena pop spectacle and county fair casualness.

0404.20-Shania's
back in America!!! [Pensacola]:
To
say Shania Twain is a country-crossover sensation isn't sufficient. During
her Monday concert at the Pensacola Civic Center, she was unabashedly pop
and a tad disco, heavy metal, and maybe even a little Caribbean. But
1980's parachute pants, powerful guitar riffs and gentle maracas didn't
drown out her country roots: Three fiddlers often rallied audience
members, who frequently rushed the stage to get autographs, to exchange
"high-fives" or to give her flowers. The multi-platinum artist and her
nine band members were constantly moving and interacting with the nearly
sold-out crowd. They worked every inch of the platform in the center of
the floor - and beyond. Twain and another band member performed one
ballad, sitting among audience members in the stadium seats. She kicked
off the concert with the hit "Man! I Feel Like a Woman," which was
followed by "Up." Later, she sang "Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under,"
"Don't Be Stupid," and "You're Still the One." Pyrotechnics sporadically
exploded around the stage, with the stomp of Twain's boot or the flip of
her long brown hair. At least six video screens hung in the rafters,
providing close-ups of her signature shimmy or her shoulder shaking. At
one point, fireworks even seemed to shoot out of the fiddles.
0404.19-Another
tour record set [Canada.com]:
Shania Twain (June 9), which sold out in a record 29 minutes in Saskatoon.
0404.14-"Would
you like fries with that?" [JSonline]:
McDonald's turns 49 tomorrow, and one past employee is non other than
Shania Twain. Country singer Shania Twain. She was
14. In a series called "My First Job" in Reader's Digest, she told writer
Daniel Levine that her manager's trust in her led her to take on new
responsibilities. "I learned tons about the meaning of service there,"
Twain once said.
0404.14-In
defense of Shania Twain:
Beverly Keel
wrote an article in 1998 about Shania, and it still applies to this day.
Here is an excerpt of the article: Maybe one of the reasons Twain has received so much flak is because
the gender-driven double standard is still thriving. She creates the
image of being a sexy, voluptuous woman, yet she's driven, focused,
and direct. As the cliché goes, such businesslike traits are
considered assets in male singers, but in Twain, they're seen as
liabilities. Nashville has seen its share of driven women--Dolly
Parton, Reba McEntire, and Pam Tillis--but the difference is that
Twain doesn't temper her drive with humor, subtlety, or modesty.
