0308.29-AC/DC
talk about Shania and Mutt:
In
the September issue of Q Magazine in the UK, AC/DC was asked about working
with Mutt Lange, and his wife Shania:
Question : Is Mutt Lange doing your next album, or have the records
he's made with his wife Shania Twain put you off working with him ?
AC/DC : I think the Def Leppard records put us off ! We're just
getting the basics together for the new record, searching for those great
riffs that are still to be had. We could give you a dozen
in a minute but we're looking for the ones that stand out. We're out on
the road now to remind us what the punters like - it puts you back in that
frame. The Mutt rumors probably started when he came to see us on the last
tour.
Question : What does Shania see in Mutt ?
AC/DC : What f*****g rude c*** asked that ?? Mutt's a great bloke.
Polite, mannered, no airs and graces. His wife, you wouldn't recognize her
- nothing like she is on stage. She does her own housework. She's a real
down-to-earth woman.
0308.29-Reaction
continues.... :
The reaction continues to the CMA nominations, and the fact Shania has
been ignored once again. Shania fans are going to wind up boycotting the
show. Even industry insiders are expressing their displeasure:
IS THERE DIRTY POOL BEING PLAYED ON THE CMA AWARDS
COMMITTEE?
Upon the recent announcement of the 2003 CMA nominees, specifically the
Entertainer of the Year category, it goes to show how much political b--l
s--t and *** kissing goes on in our format.
Every year when I attend the Country Radio Seminar, the forums are filled
with all sorts of radio and record people, plus other industry types, all
who continually bash each other as to why our format is not progressing.
These nominations are a prime example for the nation and its media buyers
to see how ridiculous and backwards we are.
Whether you are for or against what the Dixie Chicks said doesn't matter,
and it should have no bearing on how these awards show nominees are
judged. My point is, as a program director who has been to each of these
nominees concerts, and most recently the Brooks & Dunn Neon Circus show in
my market (with its slight annual changes) and the Dixie Chicks stop in
Philadelphia, I can't believe that the nomination panel is this blind.
Respectively to Alan Jackson and Brooks & Dunn, who have great shows and
are previous EOY winners, the people that selected the nominees have been
indifferent to the Dixie Chicks tour. With their incredible theater in the
round style, amazing lighting, sound, and performance design, their
production rivaled that of top billing pop and rock tours, and deserved
Entertainer of the Year respect.
Not counting chart position, radio airplay, and record sales, the
Entertainer of the Year category should be based simply on the experience
of going to the arena and being entertained better than anyone else can.
If they want to judge on sales as nomination criteria, then the Chicks win
hands down by setting history making Ticketmaster sales records and
producing mega-millions in tour revenue.
Arguably, Shania Twain is the one of if not the biggest artist in our
format, despite her lack of recent chart success and the lukewarm
reception to the Up! album on country radio. Even without these, she has
been on the Today show twice to perform, the CBS Early Show, Regis &
Kelly, a Katie Couric Dateline interview, and a 2-hour NBC prime time
concert special in the past year. No other country artist (with the
exception of Faith Hill) has had this kind of national media exposure in
the past 12 months, but still, no recognition, no nominations.
I am not being partial to the Dixie Chicks or Shania Twain. I am stating
the facts, which obviously mean nothing anymore within Music City.
I would love to be a fly on the wall of a Madison Avenue advertising
office to experience their continuous laughter at how our format keeps
tripping over its own feet with its blindness to reality.
And people wonder why we the country format is going nowhere fast.
Sincerely,
Mike Krinik
Program Director

0308.27-Reaction
to CMA snubbing Shania [Tennessean]:
Reaction to the shutout of the BEST SELLING FEMALE COUNTRY ARTIST OF
ALL TIME, continues to be a top news story. Shania Twain whose latest
album Up! has sold roughly 5 million units since its release last
November, released a statement through her publicist concerning the CMAs
decision to shut her out.
Twain's publicist, Jason W. Owen, said her
Mercury label is more pleased with the success of current album Up! than
concerned with awards nominations. Still, Owen was less than pleased with
Tuesday morning's news.
''While we are disappointed, we are not surprised by the outcome of the
nominations,'' he said. ''Shania has never been a CMA 'darling.''' To
date, her only major CMA award was 1999's Entertainer of the Year. Nashville
considers her latest effort to be too pop. I guess they have not
listened to the GREEN version of Up! which is all country. ''I
think in terms of radio airplay, these records are just generally
considered too pop,'' Jessen said. ''And with Shania's record, the rap
from radio was, 'We waited this long for a Shania Twain record, and it
sounds just like the last one.' Well, what did they want from her? A
Western swing record? I don't know.'' It is obvious from these
ignorant statements, that country radio has its own agenda and never
intended to even give Up! a chance on radio. Despite their attempt to shut
her out of airplay, Shania fans have requested and requested her songs on
radio. Her latest single "Forever and For Always" has reached the top 5 on
the Billboard Chart. Shania has also been the focus of a variety of
specials on CMT. Shania is good enough for the ratings, but not good
enough to recognize her hard work. Even country traditionalist Brad
Paisley sees what is going on. In an interview for
CMT, Brad was asked about the CMAs decision to not recognize Shania.
" Because those are very, very important artists in
country music that are absent. When that happens, you’ve got to hope that
county music isn’t shooting itself in the foot and the ones that are in
there will love it as much as they should" Brad continues...Because
when you’re talking about people who have sold a lot of records -- and
they have -- then they’re important. And spending a little bit of time out
West, it’s been fun to be exposed to a little bit of Hollywood culture
through my wife [actress Kimberly Williams-Paisley] and see what they
think of country music. There are icons in our business, and those two
belong on the list. Whether or not there’s an argument about how country
they are, that’s not the point. The fact that they do well and the fact
that they’re visible in our industry sends a message to Hollywood that
country music is healthy and powerful. What you’ve got to hope is that our
industry recognizes that from time to time. It may not be the country-est
music being made, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s any less
important.
You can let the CMA know how disappointed you are with their decision to
shut Shania out of the nominations. Send them an email..

SNUBBED by the CMAs!!!!
The 2003 CMA Nominations came out today, and Shania Twain has been shut
out!!!! Once again Nashville has showed what a closed mind it
has. Shania was the lead story on the nominations on both Inside
Edition and Entertainment Tonight.

overrated cutie? Nah! [Sky
News]:
Pop
star Shania Twain has declared herself surprised by the amount of
attention she gets from men. The Canadian born star, whose album Come On
Over is the most successful record ever made by a woman, remains modest
about her looks. This despite having posed for sexy photo shoots in FHM,
Maxim and GQ. "I don't think I'm ugly, I just think I'm
overrated on the cutie-factor," she told The Mail on Sunday's Night and
Day magazine: The 37-year-old added: "I'm not going to look like
Cindy Crawford, or a top model. "Those people are perfect, that's
why they have that job. "But I am a musician. How can I be voted the
sexiest woman, or whatever? That happens to Raquel Welch."

to visit Timmins?
An
article in the Timmins Times over the weekend states that the Shania Twain
Centre is expecting Shania to visit her hometown during her Up! Word
Tour. Tracy Hautanen, customer service
manager, Shania Twain Centre. “We expect a visit during her worldwide
tour,” she said. “The only tour dates she has announced are up until
December and we were pleased Timmins was not mentioned because we would
like to have her visit in the summer.”
Although the centre will have to discuss any plans for the summer 2004
homecoming, there will definitely be a reopening of the Shania Twain
Centre.
“We will have to sit down with her management team to plan any events and
they have been really great to us. No matter what the plans are, I’m sure
it will be a great event. We are really excited about it,” she added.
Although Shania has yet to visit the centre, Hautanen said that the singer
is and always has been a big supporter. In fact, the centre always
receives the latest clothing and awards belonging to the superstar.
“We had her Juno Awards before she even had them because they were sent to
us right from Ottawa. We also had her Walk of Fame dress sent right after
the event.”
“She definitely wants to visit the centre,” she continued. “I don’t
think people realize the commitment she has to make to promote an album.”
“And when Shania does visit, Timmins residents better stand in line first
because fans will be banging down our doors,” concluded Hautanen.

to perform in movie [STNAOFC]:
It is being reported that Shania has filmed a cameo for an upcoming movie.
The working title of the film is "I Love Huckabee's". According to
IMDb,
Shania Twain has been added to the cast. It is a
small role, and she has already filmed the part.
According to some posts on the
IMDb site's
message board...This ensemble comedy is about
a married couple (Dustin Hoffman, Lily Tomlin) who work as detectives,
helping people solve existential crises in their lives. The central
characters (Jude Law, Naomi Watts, Mark Wahlberg) are involved in a
romantic triangle of sorts. The title refers to Huckabee's, the business
Law's character works at. Twain's character interacts with the characters
played by Watts and Law. Although the role is minor, the scene is a vital
part of the film. Twain filmed her role in July 2003 in Los Angeles,
California. and
From what I heard she plays a tenant in the same
apartment complex as Jude Law and Naomi Watts characters. The movie
finishes filming in September. I also heard her scene was filmed in
August, not July. Should be a good movie. Great cast

talks about all her fans [Launch]:
Shania discussed the success of her latest TV Special. Shania says it is
due to her diverse fan base.

"Some of my fans are concert-goers, some of my fans
prefer to see me on TV, some of the fans just wanna listen to the records,
but there's so many different types of them that I think it spreads out to
all the different formats, and it's difficult for me to break it down
cause I don't really know," Twain said. "I'm guessing here when I tell you
this, but when I'm at my concerts and I see the fans, that's the only
thing I can draw from for an answer or some kind of conclusion."
Shania doesn't think there is a way to pin down her audience to a
particular type of person. "I don't think any of
these things are a science," Twain said. "There's so many unknowns. The
only thing that it boils down to for me if I'm really observing it is just
the fact that the audience is so wide. I find that in the industry,
they're always trying to aim for, 'What's her demographic?' These people,
that's their job. They're marketing people--they gotta try and figure this
out like a science, but it's just not as simple as that with me because
there just is no one demographic for me. It's very diverse."

loves being a mom [RadioLia]:
Last
night Shania called into Lia's radio show. Shania talked about the tour,
her album, and the new love in Mutt and Shania's life, their baby
boy Eja. Shania says.... ...point in life where he knows
"Mummy's someone special." Eja's fav: Nah! and UP!
Shania was asked : Any plans to have a little bro or sis? Shania: At
this point no, but you never know what's going to happen. The next year
and a 1/2 are all planned out...tour. Said that she MUST keep Eja
near her...can't have him far away. Said being the older sister, she got a
good feel of having kids around. She's enjoying experience of the new love
of being a Mom.
Shania introduced her new single "Nah!" by saying...OOOOO here you go
everybody!! This is Eja's favorite: Nah! After the song, Shania
continued talking about him. Shania said Eja's at the point where he
knows Mommy's music when he hears it and he knows that that's what she
does. His favorite part is to go "Nah nah nah nah"

talks tour [TVGuide]
Shania Twain capitalizes on her ongoing identity
crisis in her new CD Up!, a double-disc set that features the same 19
songs done performed in both country and pop styles. However, fans
shouldn't expect such double standards on tonight's NBC concert special
Shania Up! Live in Chicago (8 pm ET).
"I have a large band, there are nine musicians, and in a sense we sort of
do a mix," Twain tells TV Guide Online. "I have three fiddle players, so
even though during one song we are [performing] more on the side of the
[pop] version, we'll still have the fiddles playing the part that was
played on the [country] version and vice versa.
"So, the live versions in a lot of cases are [unique]," continues the
37-year-old songstress. "It is kind of interesting. I sort of treat 'live'
like it's own beast in a way. It's a completely separate entity."
And it's one Twain will embrace in a big way again beginning Sept. 25,
when the singer kicks off her first world tour in more than three years in
Hamilton, Ontario. If only her 2-year-old son, Eja, was as enthused about
it. "He has an affinity more for 'Hey, Diddle, Diddle,'" she admits. "I've
had to sing that repeatedly at bedtime. I think he is more drawn to that
right now than he is to his mommy's music."

Up! and Running! [Zap2it]:
Shania
talks about her upcoming TV Special:
The concert includes songs from Twain's latest
compact disc, "UP!" including the singles "I'm Gonna Getcha Good" and
"Forever and for Always."
"It's not a touring show," Twain says. "It's more the idea of a one-off.
There isn't a dramatic theme or anything like that. It's pretty much a
straight-ahead rock summer concert in the park. That's the feeling I want
to give off. It's not the same sort of production direction you might take
on a stadium tour.
"It's a much freer feeling than that, which is great. I've been off tour
for three-and-a-half years. We haven't been on stage for so long, and for
me, there's something fresh about it and exciting. There'll be an
adrenaline that's higher than usual."
Twain chose Chicago, she says, because "It just ended up being a great
location. The city itself is cool, but we had to think about park
location. This happened to be a park that is well suited to setting up a
big concert.
"The city's been so cooperative. That's been the main reason -- who can we
work with that's really going to make this happen? They've been amazing."
As for the kind of faces she expects to see in the crowd, Twain suspects
it will be varied. "If I look at my audience, they're so
salt-and-peppered. Maybe there'd be a group of six teenage girls, then
you'll see, beside them, a family with parents in their 30s and their two
kids under eight. Then, you'll see maybe an older couple on the other
side.
"It's really funny to see all these people just getting into the music,
and how they all react and respond to each other."
Shania also discusses Mutt's influence on her music, and her influence on
Mutt:
"Mutt was actually more of a musical influence on me
before I met him than he is now," Twain says. "He was responsible for so
much of the music in my teens: The Cars, Def Leppard, Bryan Adams, AC/DC,
Billy Ocean. A big part of why we came together in the first place was
because of his love for country music.
"So, it's quite ironic that I was so influenced by his rock background,
and he was so influenced by the country background."
How will motherhood change Shania's writing in the future:
"In the future, I will be writing from a deeper
perspective. I just feel deeper now. My emotions are deeper; my thought
processes are deeper."
For now, she'd just like you to tune in on Tuesday. "I'm hosting this
concert, which is how I'm seeing it, and everybody's invited."

up to old tricks [CountryStars]
From CountryStars.....TWAIN NOT LOSING SLEEP OVER
UP!
Once before we reported that Shania Twain is not worried that sales of UP!
haven't roared into the ozone. With just under 4 million albums sold it
looks anemic when compared to her duo of 10 million selling second and
third albums.
She told a recent hook-up with Newspaper reporters that she's not worried
since sales of UP! continue to out-pace her Diamond certified COME ON OVER
and THE WOMAN IN ME at the same juncture. The Tennessean checked and found
out she's right. At the 8 month mark THE WOMAN IN ME had moved 1.5 million
units, while Come On Over had sold 3.9 million.
I really love it when Shania sticks it to them!!
0308.02-Shania
in the Big Apple:
Shania
Twain visited New York City to publicize her upcoming tour, and her new
NBC Special, Live from Chicago. Shania on 07/31/03 stopped by the Regis
and Kelly show. Shania talked about the new album Up!. Shania also talked
glowingly about her son Eja. Shania's next stop was the
TODAY Show. Shania performed as part of the Today Show's Summer
Concert Series. This was Shania's 3rd appearance as part of their concert
series. Shania sang "Forever and For Always", her current single [KEEP
REQUESTING!!!], "That Don't Impress Me Much", and what is rumored to
be her next single "Nah!". Check out the following links to see some of
her
performance, and a
preview
of her upcoming special.
Here are some news pictures of her performance. Video Captures will be
added to my site, hopefully by the end of the weekend.

After
performing on the TODAY show, Shania taped a segment for CBS This
Morning. Shania performed "I'm Gonna Getcha Good", "Forever and For
Always", "You're Still The One", and "Nah!". This should air on August
20th. However, I was at the taping, and noted lots of errors by the hosts
in regards to Eja's Birthday, and which songs she was performing that day.
