0212.30-Shania #1 for fifth
straight week!!!![Yahoo]
Shania
has sold 2+ million copies of her latest cd Up!
Shania was Santa's stocking stuffer of choice this holiday season. For
the week ended Sunday, Shania retained chart dominance by selling 455,000
copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan numbers. Up! saw a holiday
boost of 78,000 from the previous week. Shania Twain is probably the most
user-friendly musician on the planet right now. Everything about her
current album, "Up!", is genetically engineered to please as many people
as possible, particularly the unprecedented decision to record three
different versions of each song to appeal to different tastes. And,
oh, how it's succeeding. Twain's album has topped Billboard's album chart
for the month it has been out, racking up more than 2 million in sales in
the United States alone during the most important stretch of the year for
retailers. She's left other big-name divas with new music —
Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Faith Hill — in the dust. Only Eminem (news
- web sites) is her equal as the most popular figure in music.
"I think only what the public thinks," Twain said. "If they don't like my
music, why should I bother making it? I make music for the fans. I record
music commercially because I'm making it for them to listen to."
With her husband, record producer Robert John (Mutt) Lange, Twain has
crafted an insanely catchy album of anthems. Many musicians write personal
songs in the hope that others can relate; Twain leaves out the personal
and tries strictly for the universal. "Up!" includes a couple of
life-gets-better songs, a couple of wildly-in-love songs and several
every-woman songs: putting up a brave face because her man has left,
commiserating with a sad single, and taunting an old boyfriend who wants
to get back together. She may also be the first to hook into a
societal trend — women who max out on their credit cards because they
can't resist Sunday at the mall — and turn it into a song.
"We all understand what we have in common with the people around us," she
said. "What I do is put that into songs. Part of the fun for me, the kick,
is that I'm able to relate to the public." Her last two albums both
sold more than 10 million copies, and there's little reason to believe
"Up!" won't do the same.
The chief knock on Twain is that her music is soulless, that true emotion
is sacrificed in the effort to be popular. In other words, her songs are
fast-food hamburgers instead of steakhouse filets. Twain's not
buying it. "What is too commercial?" the Canadian songstress asked.
"If you look at the Beatles, it doesn't get any more commercial than that.
They were as commercial as anybody gets, but they had the writing ability
to back it up." With her previous album, "Come on Over," Twain
experimented with different mixes of the songs, giving birth to the idea
to make three separate versions of "Up!"
North American buyers get two discs: a version of the songs in pop-rock
style and another with country fiddles and steel guitars. The latter disc
is more overtly country than anything she's done recently. "You've
got a pop disc and an even more pop disc," said country music writer
Robert Oermann. "It's good value for the money." International
buyers get the pop-rock disc and another, recorded in India, that's a
combination of world and dance music. Twain thought of the Gipsy Kings
when making that disc. She invites North American listeners to check out
those versions for free on her Web site. "Whatever your persuasion,
she'll give you something you like," Oermann said. Contrast that
approach with Faith Hill, who has tried to expand her audience with a disc
that strays from the country path. Twain simply takes every path. "I
like that she does that unapologetically," said Beverly Keel, a music
professor at Middle Tennessee State University. "A lot of artists try to
act like it's not what they're doing or they make excuses for it. She
says, `I'm going to make it as accessible as possible.'" Twain, an
intensely private person who moved to an estate in Switzerland after her
breakout success, said she had the same existential crisis as others
following Sept. 11. Why make a record? What is it going to mean at such a
harrowing time? Her response was to go positive, not introspective.
She had already written the song "Up!", so she and Lange wrote others in
the same mode. The 19-song album is a ballad-free zone, and the song
titles include 10 exclamation points!
"I've always tried to write music that was inspirational," she said.

0212.10-Shania Twain Upset She
Can't Share Success With Her Folks:[92.3FM]
Shania Twain might be top of the charts again with her comeback album -
but she's desperately sad that her parents didn't live to see her success.
The Up! singer admits the fact her mother and dad are dead makes her
personal and professional successes hollow - especially now that she's
become a mother herself for the first time. She says, "Every woman wants
their mother to share the first cries and the first smiles of their baby,
and I would have loved to spend money on my parents." Twain's folks died
in a car crash when the singer was just 22 years old - years before her
career took off.
0212.10-Shania's idea of a
vacation:
SHANIA TWAIN has come roaring back into the music world with her new
album, titled “UP!” The CD has been number one for two weeks in a row on
the “Billboard” pop and country charts. Shania’s last tour ended almost
three years ago. So, did she lie around eating Swiss chocolates for all
that time? She says she did relax for about six months and was able to,
quote, “play with my horses, and be with my husband and just enjoy home.”
Then, work began on the new album and Shania had a baby, which is a lot of
work. So, Shania says, she did have a vacation, kind of.
0212.10-"I don't feel like a
star there," says Shania. "I feel normal."
[The
Halifax Herald]
Shania Twain's UP! may be the
best-selling album in America, but in La Tour-de-Peilz, the small
Swiss town where she lives, it's not even on record store shelves. In
order to preserve her privacy, the superstar won't allow her record
company to promote or sell the disc near her home. "I
don't feel like a star there," says Shania. "I feel normal."
0212.10-Shania #1 for 3rd
week:
Shania held off the competition for a 3rd straight week. Shania is number
one on the Billboard Album charts for Country and Pop.

Shania
appears on the cover of the December 9th issue of
TIME in Canada. The
article also appears in the US edition. Although the article has some
misleading information, the pictures are nice. Shania also appears in the
new
PEOPLE
magazine which hits news stands FRIDAY Dec 6th.
The temperature outside Shania Twain's pine cabin in
Huntsville, Ont., is 24 degrees Fahrenheit. A biting wind blows off nearby
Lake of Bays, whose water is well on its way to becoming an ice block six
feet deep. But pop music's multiplatinum-selling mistress of the midriff,
hidden now, like the rest of her, beneath coat, boots, scarf and gloves,
thinks it a perfect time to jump onto the tire swing hanging from a birch
tree in her backyard, breathe in the crisp air and let her long locks blow
in the (yup, still biting) wind.
"I'm not cold at all," says Twain. "It's a friggin' beautiful day."
Be sure to pick up this issue!!!
Shania
is also on the cover of Country Music Today magazine.
Shania
talks about her new album Up! describing the new songs.
"I specifically enjoy writing lyrics that are very
matter of fact, and very realistic. I have a lyric in one of my songs
called "What a Way To Wanna Be" and it says." I don't want to wear that/it
only makes me look fat/time to tone my thighs/gotta lose another size yeah
what a way to wanna be." And we've all experienced that. There are days I
do feel fat, and I don't like the shape of my thighs, and I could be more
toned. I could always be better and more perfect."
As these magazines become available I will post scans
of the new pictures as soon as possible.

0212.04-Up, Up And Away ![Radio
and Records]
Shania's latest single Up! hit the airwaves yesterday. Shania
Twain's latest single —"Up!" — officially takes to the airwaves at Country
radio this week and soars above the competition, earning 22 adds on its
way to Most Added honors at the format. Twain has been busy over the last
couple months with appearances at the CMA Awards, The Late Show With David
Letterman and the Today show. She also recently graced the covers of TV
Guide, Time and People and will be on the cover of the January issue of
Rolling Stone.
CONGRATULATIONS SHANIA!!!!
0212.04-Still
the one!!! 1.5 million and counting [Billboard]
Even though Tim McGraw had his best sales week ever, his
latest album
didn't
move enough copies to dethrone Shania Twain's "Up" from the top of either
The Billboard 200 or the Top Country Albums tally. Twain's Mercury set
holds the No. 1 post on both charts for a second week after selling
another 623,000 copies, according to
Nielsen SoundScan. Meanwhile, "Tim McGraw and the Dancehall Doctors"
(Curb) sold 602,000 copies and bows at No. 2 on both charts.
0212.01-Shania
goes straight to the top[CMT]
Shania Twain’s Up! debuts at No. 1 on this week’s Billboard
200 and the music trade publication’s Top Country Albums charts. Twain’s
two-CD set sold 874,000 copies during its first week of release. In sales
trivia, it puts Twain behind only rapper Eminem, whose The Eminem Show
sold 1.3 million copies during its first week of release in May. Twain’s
1997 album Come on Over spent almost a year weeks at the top of
Billboard’s country chart, although it peaked at No. 2 on the all-genre
Billboard 200 chart. According to Billboard, Come on Over has sold 14.4
million copies to date, more than any album since SoundScan began tracking
sales in 1991.
