0312.20-Billboard-
Top albums of 2003 [Billboard]:
To all
the critics and Nashville hacks who have said repeatedly that Shania
was washed up, and that her latest album was a bomb, may want to pick up
the latest issue of Billboard Magazine. Seems you got it all wrong. Up!
was recently awarded the RIAA certification of Diamond, signifying 10
million albums sold. This makes Shania the only artist in history to have
3 consecutive Diamond Awards. Now, on the heals of Shania's triple victory
at the Billboard Awards, the magazine has released their end of year top
album list. Twain finishes 2003 as the top
country artist of the year and the top female country artist. She also
comes in at No. 3 on the year-end Billboard 200 chart. "Up!" debuted at
No. 1 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart in the Dec. 7, 2002, issue
and remained there for six weeks. The project places Twain at No. 1 on
the list of Top Country Albums titles for 2003. Twain is the only
female solo artist to place among the top-10 country acts. Shania's
album Up! ranks at #3 on the overall album list. This makes Up!'s second
appearance on the list. It held the #3 spot in 2002.
One would also have to return to 1999 to find the last time Shania
Twain placed an album in the top-3. Her "Come On Over" (Mercury) landed in
third place that year, as "Up!" does for 2003. Twain is one of three
country acts in the top-10, an improvement on the past three years.

0312.20-"Man,
I feel like a woman????" [NYT]:
On the heels
of their "You Win My Love" ad during NASCAR season, Chevrolet is once
again using a Shania song in their ads. This time for their biggest
baddest truck the Colorado, whose message is
that "it's the biggest, baddest truck in its class with plenty of room,
but with attitude and a smile," Ms. Kosak said, the ad "My Man," one of
four, features five young men riding in the truck blasting "Man! I Feel
Like a Woman!" by Shania Twain. One man becomes caught up with the song -
not to the appreciation of his buddies. The punch line is, "If you're ever
uncomfortable in the new Chevy Colorado crew cab, it won't be because of
lack of space."
0312.20-Shania
a network darling [STNAOFC]:
When
TV and Music try to work together, sometimes you get some lemons, as
witnessed by the disastrous ratings of Justin Timberlake and Xtina. So,
what is a TV Network to do? Well, they turn to artists like Shania Twain.
Mainstream stars with a lot of showmanship -- Celine
Dion, Shania Twain, Cher -- can draw big numbers, said CBS research
chief David Poltrack. "It's a very small list," he said. Twain,
who had two well-received NBC specials this year, said she thinks her
shows succeed because her music bridges generation gaps. "How many social
events are there for people from the ages of 3 to 83?" Twain said. "My
audience is very diverse."
0312.20-Shania's
quite a woman! [SignOnSanDiego]:
.......In
an era dominated by pop music divas with huge egos, tiny talent and even
tinier outfits, the country-rocking, pop-savvy Twain seemed as if she
might have dropped in from a far more wholesome planet. She didn't make
one reference to her latest release, "Up!" just named Billboard's
top-selling country album of 2003 (even though the double-CD features
country and pop versions of the same 19 songs). Nor did she mention that
her lucrative North American tour has just been extended by several
months, or allude to her lofty status as the world's biggest-selling
female artist of the past decade in any idiom. In fact, from her
concert-opening "Man! I Feel Like a Woman!" to her closing encore of "Rock
This Country!", the exclamation-happy Canadian singer-songwriter didn't
say anything about herself to her nearly 11,000 multigenerational fans.
She also ignored such de rigueur diva behavior as bump-and-grind dance
routines, faux orgasmic moans posing as soulful vocal inflections and
bouncy aerobic routines.......It was an endearing victory of
pitch-wandering vocal authenticity over prefab artifice. Just as startling
was Twain's conservative stage attire, especially for an artist whose
sexy, navel-baring videos turned Nashville's country-music establishment
inside out in the mid-1990s. Combined with Twain's unfailingly sunny
disposition and devotion to her fans – has any other pop star ever signed
more autographs while singing on stage? – her concert seemed as American
(or Canadian) as apple pie.

0312.17-Can
you feel the love tonight [North Shore]:
You have to
check out this excellent review of Shania's Vancouver concert. I think the
reviewer has captured what we love about Shania.
.....But
I did notice that Shania is not a conventional stage performer. She sings
beautifully, of course, but mostly she just spills large quantities of
love onto the crowd, and then spends the balance of the evening sponging
it up. The Vancouver crowd just loved its Shania Twain sponge bath.
And I noticed that Shania doesn't spend much time on that extraordinary
oval masterpiece of a stage that her people lug around the world for her,
at great cost. She seems to prefer tip-toeing through the crowd - which
makes sense, I guess, because that is where she spilled her love.....But I
don't care what others have said about Shania's taste in stage costumes. I
love the way she dresses, forever and for always. As far as I'm concerned,
Shania Twain could duck waddle on to the stage wearing a bean bag chair
and she would still be the most attractive biological entity on the
planet.
0312.17-"Forever
and For Always, year's best"
[CMT]:
CMT
USA, has picked "Forever and For Always" one of the year's best ballads.
Shania Twain, "Forever and For Always" (Mercury):
Without a perky "Let's go!" or even a "whoo!" Twain offered the most
romantic ballad of 2003. Nice rolling rhythm underneath the melody, too.
Shania Twain, "Forever and For Always" (Mercury):
At this point, even their detractors would have to admit that Twain and
her producer husband know how to make great sounding records. With so many
of Twain's songs designed as arena anthems, it's nice to hear something
that would work in an acoustic club.
0312.17-Shania's
wonderful gesture
[CountryStars]:
Shania's high-energy, world-class, all-hit,
great-sounding Up! Tour rolled into Anaheim, CA's The Pond arena last
night. Twain was fighting a cold that sometimes forced her to sing in a
lower register to get through some songs, but she sucked it up nicely and
gave the crowd everything she had. PLUS, she also gave a little more to
one special fan.
Twain likes interacting with the crowd and does so several times during
the show. At one point she stopped signing autographs for fans
pressed up against the stage. She suddenly stepped down from the stage and
said, "Please let me get by, there's somebody I have to talk to." At that,
Shania headed toward a fan that seemed be a cerebral palsy victim who
she'd seen struggle to stand up in front of her wheel chair just as the
rest of the fans around were on their feet cheering for their favorite
star. Twain approached this special fan, hugged her and spoke to her
briefly, before returning to the stage." It was a very sweet, spontaneous
moment.
This is why Shania is such a special person
0312.15-Shania
makes history
[PR
News Wire]:
Shania is
now the first artist in history to have back to back to back Diamond albums. Shania's
latest album, Up! has been certified 10x Platinum by the
RIAA. Up! now joins the
rank of Shania's two previous albums, "The Woman In Me", and "Come On
Over". This tops off a great year for Shania, from the Super Bowl to her
record setting opening of her current Up! World Tour.
As a gifted and passionate recording artist and
songwriter, Shania has emerged as a driving force in contemporary music,"
stated Luke Lewis, Chairman of Universal Music Nashville/President of Lost
Highway Records. "We are all incredibly delighted with the success of
'UP!' and we're looking forward to taking the project even further."
Released one year ago, "UP!" heralded Shania's return to the top of the
charts. The album debuted at #1 with sales of over 800,000. Spawning hit
singles such as "I'm Gonna Getcha Good!, " "UP!," and "Forever and For
Always." Her current, "She's Not Just A Pretty Face," is now making its
way up the charts across the country. Moreover, her international "UP!"
Tour recently kicked off with record-breaking sales and rave reviews. The
Washington Post exclaims, "The biggest female artist in pop-country offers
a kind of perfection, in song and appearance, a radiance that at moments
seems superhuman and effortless." She has announced dates in the US up
through June 2004.

0312.15-Lights,
Camera, Action!
[STNAOFC]:
Shania
Twain, who was named country artist of the year, took a brief break from
music this year to film a small role in the upcoming Jude Law film "I
Heart Huckabee's." However, don't expect to see much more of her on the
silver screen. "It was my first time on a movie set.
I enjoyed it, but would I want to put everything else aside and dedicate
myself to doing something like that? I don't know," she said. "I've got so
many more songs to write. I think I'd get a bigger thrill writing
something for a movie, a screenplay. I'm certainly not an actress, that's
for sure."

0312.14-A
cold didn't chill her genuine warmth
[Oregonian]:
Shania performing with a bad cold Thursday night in Portland, impressed
her fans much! But Twain was throttled back a bit
Thursday night, fighting a cold, although she was in good form and fine
voice. Once, during a chorus of "The Woman in Me" which she sang seated in
the crowd with one of her guitarists, she slipped off her stool with a
yelp but recovered quickly. "Too much Sudafed," she joked. But a cold
didn't chill her genuine warmth toward her fans. She knelt to sign
autographs and photos while she sang, slapped hands with the people
thronged around the stage and took notice of the dozens of homemade signs
held aloft. GET WELL SOON SHANIA!!!!!
0312.11-In
your car, she'll be the driver
[Net
Music]:
Anheuser-Busch conducted a poll to find out what
celebrities folks would most like to have as their fantasy designated
driver, and Tim McGraw came out on top. Thirty-three percent of
respondents voted for him. Celine Dion was top female with 27%, followed
closely by SHANIA TWAIN with 26%. "Choosing a designated driver is a
responsible and important decision, and it just makes good sense," said
Tim McGraw. "I am delighted that I would be their choice!"
0312.11-Feeling
Young
[Las Vegas Sun]:
After
Shania's big win at the Billboard Awards. Some of the local media asked
her if she would consider a long term gig in town. Shania responed:
"I may
consider it when I am old or something," she said. "Isn't it something
that old people come and do? I mean I have too much energy to settle in
one place. I'd get bored." The audience gasped. Shania a bit
shocked, replied, "What was so controversial about
that?" asked Twain, apparently surprised by the negative reaction
to the inference that Vegas is a boneyard for past-their-prime
entertainers. Well, isn't???
0312.10-VICTORY!!!!!!
[CJAD]:
Shania
talked to the media about her Billboard victory tonight:
Country
superstar Shania Twain walked away from the Billboard Awards on Wednesday
with three trophies. The singer was named country artist of the year
and her album Up, which debuted at No.1 on the Billboard 200, was named
country album and country albums of the year. The record, which includes
the hit I'm Gonna Getcha Good, has remained on the Billboard country
charts for more than a year "It's been a terrific year for me. Fans
have been so great," Twain said after performing She's Not Just a Pretty
Face, surrounded by school children. "I'm always so grateful and humbled."

0312.09-Local
girl sings with Shania [Herald
Tribune]:
"It was so cool. It was exciting," said Tenille, who
shared the stage with her idol on Friday night at Rexall Place in
Edmonton. "She put her hand out, grabbed my arm and pulled me onstage. We
danced around and sang What a Way to Want to Be. Then she asked me to sing
a solo so I sang a chorus of a song by myself, with no band or anything. I
wasn't nervous at all. Shania was right there. I didn't really care about
anything else." Holding a sign that said "Shania, Can I Sing With You?"
and sporting a Twain-like outfit and hairstyle in the front row, Tenille
and her mom, Monique, were first noticed by a security guard who
encouraged them to keep the sign up. Shania Twain has been Tenille's
favourite singer since she was five. "While I was up there with her I told
her she has an amazing voice and that she's beautiful and my hero," she
said. "It was a dream come true."

sweet as sugar [Vancouver
Sun]:
A
record crowd of 17,000 -- diverse by both gender and age -- at Pacific
Coliseum Sunday night were on their feet from the first distinctive
staccato blasts of Man! I feel like a woman! and kept the positive vibes
flowing throughout a high-energy concert, which lasted almost two hours.
As the music and swirling lights intensified, Twain appeared on an oval
centrestage that featured walkways, steps and a raised centre platform
rimmed with lights. She wore a Vancouver Canucks jersey, blue jeans, red
running shoes and lots of sparkly jewelry around her neck and wrists.
(During the second half of the show, Twain did her male fans a favour,
tossing the baggy jersey for a yellow tank top with a peek-a-boo view of a
black lace bra.) "It's so beautiful here," announced Twain, whose
chatty, bubbly personality rarely results in any comments of substance.
"It really is gorgeous here. Even in the rain, it's beautiful.".....At one
point, she launched herself into the audience, (which included her
brother, Mark) only to get lost when she couldn't find an aisle. "Oh, I
can't get there," she said. Back on the safety of the stage, someone
suggested she walk over the crowd next time. "Crowd surfing? I've never
done that before. Some of you guys might grab my butt, and I wouldn't like
that."

0312.09-Emerson
Drive [Calgary
Sun]:
Emerson
Drive has been touring with Shania on the Canadian leg of her Up! Tour,
and was recently added to her last group of dates in the USA. Here are
some comments that the group has made about the tour, and Shania Twain:
“We knew we had the Canadian dates with Shania
Twain,” says Emerson Drive lead singer Brad Mates, “but we got a call
after the award show to say we had some of the U.S. dates too. Obviously
we were flipping out.
“It’s been amazing playing to 20,000 people a night with the biggest star
in the world,” adds the Grande Prairie singer. “We have to pinch ourselves
every day.” Normally, an opening act is limited to a portion of the stage,
but not on Twain’s tour. “The stage will blow your mind. She told us we
could use the whole stage if we wanted. Her generosity is amazing.”....Not
only is the gig a dream-come- true, being backstage also rocks. “The
catering backstage is amazing. It’s like going to a five-star restaurant
every night … Subway kind of goes out the window.” The tour has also
allowed Emerson Drive the chance to meet another of their heroes — Twain’s
husband and legendary producer, Robert (Mutt) Lange. “She’s so
down-to-earth and sweet and he’s great. The first time he was introduced
to us, the first thing he said was ‘Sorry we took so long (at sound
check)’ — and it’s their show!” They also managed to shock Lange
when they played Only God (Could Stop Me Loving You). “He stopped in his
tracks … he’d forgotten he’d written it,” chuckles Mates.

0312.04-What
makes Shania sexy? [Edmonton Sun]:
....A discussion
of Shania's hottitude would not be complete without mentioning what some
have called her greatest marketing tool - her navel. The almost ubiquitous
appearance of Twain's bare bellybutton is as much a part of Shania's
career as Dolly Parton's large breasts were a part of Dolly's career. They
get your attention. Then you get the music that hopefully lives up to the
arresting image of the artist. Result - a superstar.
During an interview with the Edmonton Sun in 1998, Shania played dumb and
asked of her own navel, "Why is mine so famous? I'll never know."
She addressed the issue of using sex to sell music: "I don't think that
it's a belly button that makes somebody sexy. Somebody can be incredibly
unsexy and show their belly button." (Talk about pointing out the
painfully obvious.) "So it's got nothing to do with what you reveal. I
think it's the music that dictates that. It's the voice that dictates
that. I don't think it would matter what I wore. I think that there's just
a sexy way about the way I translate my music." She can say that again.

0312.03-Nashville
gets run over by a Twain
The
Edmonton Sun is doing a week long series of articles on Shania. So far
a lot of the articles are riddled with errors, but their latest article is
interesting. It focuses in on just why Nashville does not like her, and
how hypocritical they really are:
One
of the funny things is that most of the anti-Shania whining came from the
very heart of the country music establishment - Nashville (Music Row
refers to the street where record label offices are located) - which had
already given us Achy Breaky Heart and the massive success of Garth (who
blew the grade curve for all future country album sales expectations). It
was a classic case of the pot calling the kettle black, or in this case,
white.

0312.02-People's
Choice Awards:
Shania was nominated for a People's Choice Award.
The show airs on CBS, January 11th. Shania is up for "Favorite Female
Musical Performer"
0312.02-She's
got legs [Calgary]:
..and
she knows how to use them, even though Shania says she does not like her
short legs. But in 1996, only a year after breaking
into mainstream music, Twain confessed her unlikely fault to Chatelaine
magazine. The comment began as a deflector from the bigger story: her bare
belly. "This is the midriff year," she said. "Who knows what it will be
next year? I hate my legs, so I'll never have a leg year."
Since then, Shania has appeared in short skirts, in
her "Man! I Feel Like A Woman" video,
and some outrageous outfits. So, what is Shania's secret?
Her secret is that she wears them with long,
body-hugging jackets, midriff-baring tops and thigh-high boots (no
leather, however; she's an animal lover). "She's got a brilliant stylist,"
says Heather Mitchell of Holt Renfrew. "What she wears draws your
eye away from her leg because she's wearing something so over-the-top,"
says Mitchell, recalling the Givenchy buckle dress as one of Twain's most
outrageous.
0312.02-Traveling
with Eja [CountryStars]:
Shania told
CountryStars:
As Shania Twain's tour extends into next year one
thing she's thankful for is that her baby boy, Eja, is such a trooper.
"It's kinda good, it all feels very comfortable, it's not a really big
problem," says Shania about traveling with her toddler. "He's still
young enough that he's not in school and he just goes with the flow and we
get to go visit city zoos and museums and it's interesting. And I like
being on the move and he's very good about it, so we manage just fine."
0312.01-Keith
Urban talks Shania [CountryStars]:
Regarding Shania Twain's acceptance at country and
pop radio, Keith Urban recently weighed in, saying her effect on what's
acceptable to country purists is an example of the ever evolving nature of
country music.
"I think Shania making the record she did (Come On Over) changed the
acceptance of what country could be. I mean albeit hers being an extreme
version of that, but I mean good lord, country is always evolving, it's
always got records being made that are extreme versions of what it could
be and then watered down versions come out that are a little closer to
acceptance. Chet Atkins, he came in and added lush strings and the music
community, the purists, hated it. Now he's got a street named after him!
So you just ... it's a constant evolution and same as it ever was at the
end of the day."
