0309.30-Shania in Buffalo FIRST PICS!!!

0309.30-Shania reaches her fans [Post Gazette]:

How does Shania Twain do it? Performing at Mellon Arena on the first U.S. date of her Up! World Tour Monday night, she crammed hit after hit into her two-hour concert. She wore four flashy outfits. She performed amid eye-popping sparkler showers and indoor fireworks. But none of these was her most impressive feat. Twain's sheer will to literally touch as many fans as possible while still managing to sing with precision and feeling was truly jaw-dropping. The concert stage was in the middle of the arena floor and Twain almost constantly patrolled its outer edge to shake or slap hands, wave and trade smiles. She also accepted marker after marker to sign everything from hats to T-shirts to ticket stubs....For those who got close to their idol, as well as those who just drank in the good vibes and popular tunes, it was an evening pleasantly spent.

0309.30-Shania takes Pittsburgh by storm [CMT]:

At first, Twain seemed to find the crowd a bit quiet and tentative, finally admonishing them with a cry of, "Get off your butts! Come on!" as she launched into "I’m Not in the Mood (To Say No!)." She soon met fans halfway, though, as she began greeting them at the edge of the stage during almost every song. Twain graciously accepted notes and flowers, touched outstretched hands and even signed autographs while seamlessly delivering every note and phrase. Twain did admit, "Sometimes I get distracted reading your signs." She made a point of inviting two fans with posters onstage between tunes. A fan named Ed caught Twain’s eye with a sign reading, "You kissed my right cheek in ’98. How about the left?" Ed received his kiss as well as a signature on his bright yellow Shania T-shirt. Twain also brought up 17-year-old Misha who toted a poster to the show proclaiming it was her birthday. Twain had the whole arena crowd sing to the teen and also had Misha sing a few bars of "I’m Gonna Getcha Good!"

0309.30-"Hey, this is really cool!" [Ottawa]:

Anthony, 13, a drummer for the Ottawa band Simply Wow!, was one of 12 drummers picked to play onstage Saturday night at Ms. Twain's sold-out show at the Corel Centre. The Grade 8 student was picked from among 30 drummers to help perform (If You're Not In It For Love) I'm Outta Here! The younger Di Millo said the weekend experience has made him a big fan. "I think Shania is great. After that concert, I'm listening to her CD all the time."

0309.30-Shania sets record [Yahoo]:

Shania's tour is only 4 shows old, and Shania is already setting records. Mercury has released the following press release:

As if becoming the biggest selling female solo artist of all time wasn't enough, superstar Shania Twain sets a new record in concert sales. The Grammy-Award winning singer dazzled the Canadians as she kicked off the first date of her worldwide, "UP!" tour, setting an all-time record at Copps Coliseum in Hamilton, Ontario with an attendance of 18,573 and a record-setting gross of $1,282,984 (USD). Twain followed her opening night success with a sell-out crowd in Ottawa, Ontario, where she grossed an astonishing $1,195,587 (USD), exceeding her country cohorts, The Dixie Chicks.

Shania is also winning over her critics, and getting ready to release her next single:

The Toronto Sun says: "Twain's performance put most politicians to shame ... The fans ate up every single Shania second of it," and the Ottawa Sun calls the show, "Pretty much flawless ... 4 out of 5." The stage offers the fans an opportunity to get up-close and personal with Shania. Set up "in-the-round," the show offers a high-energy spectacle. Shania not only performs her recent chart-topping hits "I'm Gonna Getcha Good!" and "Forever and For Always" but also gives the fans a taste of her memorable classics, "Man! I Feel Like A Woman" and "Still The One." Shania is scheduled to appear later this fall on "OPRAH" with her friend and idol, Dolly Parton, where she will perform her new single, "She's Not Just A Pretty Face", which was just released to radio and is already becoming an instant Shania classic.

0309.29-Up! World Tour is on its way [CountryStars]:

Shania Twain spent two weeks rehearsing in a place called Steeltown, near Hamilton, Ontario, before kicking off her World tour in Hamilton's Copps Coliseum before an estimated 20,000 fans. The two-hour (24 song set) lived up to Shania's promise to keep in this tour many of the things that made her last tour a success, including lots of audience participation and giving back to the communities' efforts to feed hungry children.
Shania continues traditions she started with her Come On Over Tour:

her practice of allowing local talent onto a big stage for the experience. She invited a group of local drummers to march up on to the stage and play alongside her and the band for "(If You're Not In It For Love) I'm Outta Here"!  FOR CHARITY she spent time before the show with a group of Make-A-Wish children and collected food from arriving fans for local food banks.
GET READY AMERICA!!!!

Her first official U.S. tour appearance in Pittsburgh, PA and on to Buffalo, tomorrow night. The Toronto Sun described it as a great show, expansive in-the-round type open stage, with best lighting and pyrotechnics money can buy.

0309.29-Her live shows are by now the stuff of legend [Buffalo News]:

It is nice reading an article like this....

Sure, it's nice to have racked up a handful of Juno awards, a mantel's worth of Grammys, a Country Music Association statue or two. But having a your own brand of lipstick? That's got to rock!
Shania Twain, who recently launched the Shania Red line, sales of which will benefit the American Heart Association, has sold more records this year than Johnny Cash did in his lifetime.
She's also been a bit of a litmus test for the ongoing battle between fans of "old" and "new" country. Old-schoolers claim Twain's polished twang is nothing more than pop music with a faux Southern accent - and she's not even from the South. (Twain is Canadian.)   Fans of the new C&W sound could care less about Twain's credibility - they love her and gobble up her albums by the millions. Art? Commerce? Does anyone actually care? Twain's 2002 release, "Up," solidified a winning streak begun with the 1995 album "The Woman in Me." Working with husband/producer Mutt Lange (prior to going country, Lange was best-known for his work with AC/DC and Def Leppard), Twain has created an eminently hummable canon and in the process made herself a mega-star on the international level. Her live shows are by now the stuff of legend

0309.28-Shania gives her fans an eye-popping thank you! [Ottawa]:

Shania brought her tour to Ottawa. Fans were treated to a high octane performance. During the show Shania interacted with her fans, slapping hands, and signing autographs.  Shania brings her show to the USA next, with a stop in Pittsburgh on September 29th.

From the Ottawa Citizen:

Shania Twain wore a purple fur bra in front of more than 18,000 people at the Corel Centre last night but still managed to come across as someone you could trust with your pre-schooler.  In fact, one mom in the audience did entrust her daughter to the Canadian superstar for a moment. After her mother thrust her on stage, the little girl stood there, not too sure of the situation, until Twain picked her up, every so gently. As a mom herself, Twain obviously didn't want to make the girl cry, so she stayed close to the parent and watched for signs of discomfort. I'm not sure which was most impressive: the maternal instinct of someone who looked that outrageous, or the fact that she did it without dropping a note of Don't Be Stupid, (You Know I Love You). Either way, it was a remarkable display of tenderness.
From the Ottawa Citizen:

Thousands of Shania Twain fans lined up early in the rain outside the Corel Centre yesterday, eagerly awaiting the country superstar's concert.
Taking shelter in one of the huge white tents and dancing in anticipation, Laureen Ashley, 44, came all the way from Halifax, N.S., to see the show. Joined by her husband, Peter, and their friends, Chris and Karen Paley, it was their first time in the city. "We're really excited to be here," she said. "This is just a beautiful city, the people are great, and we can't wait for Shania."

From the Ottawa Sun:

Twain entered at floor level and danced through the audience toward the stage in a turquoise bra, a furry purple bra top, satin cargo pants and bright blue sneakers. The entire show was as relentlessly upbeat as Twain and husband Mutt Lange's tendency to pepper her albums with exclamation marks. She opened with Man! I Feel Like a Woman! from her 1997, 34-million-copy-selling second CD Come On Over, moved quickly to Up! from her latest CD of the same name and wrapped up in a fury of fiddles, Canada Day-style fireworks and oodles of fluttering confetti, twirling and singing Rock This Country! Twain provided her fans with a solid, generous mix of old and new songs, lesser-knowns and bona fide hits, even cramming When, You Win My Love, Come On Over and I'm Holdin' On to Love (to Save My Life) into a medley.

0309.26-Get to know her, lyrically speaking:

Heath McCoy has written an excellent article on Shania and her music. Check out the full article: The Calgary Herald.

Excerpts:

Double Standard-ville
For all her all equality talk, however, Shania isn't as concerned with the concept when it applies to men. When she catches her man stealing a glance at a foxy lady who isn't her in Waiter! Bring Me A Water! she dumps her drink on the cad. "There's gotta be a way to cool this clown," she sings. But she chastises her man for his jealous ways in Don't Be Stupid (You Know I Love You) when she says, "I don't appreciate it/ When I talk to other guys ... And I get the third degree."
Then, of course, there's the hit Any Man of Mine, where she declares that it's OK for her to be late for a date, "but he better be on time." Furthermore, if she burns his dinner black he's supposed to lick his lips and say, yummy. Oh yeah, and as for any mood swings that might occur, suck it up, bub. (You mind your Ps and Qs). Poor Mutt.
The Hopeless Romantic
From This Moment On, You're Still The One, Forever and for Always: These ballads are worthy of the Lionel Richie-Diana Ross treatment. Sappy sweet? Sure they are. So was that infernal Dan Hill with his Sometimes When We Touch tune. But, 26 years later, Hill still gets hearts gushing and people singing along about a billion times a day on radio. Like Hill's, Shania's sap is powerful stuff.

Tongue-In Cheek Humour:

C'mon. How much proof do you need? Read all the lyrics above (save for the lovey-dovey stuff) and try to deny it. This is a woman with her tongue planted firmly in her cheek.
And that might just be the secret to her success.

0309.26-Shania Up! to a great start:

From the TORONTO SUN:

With an open stage that had an incredible-looking lighting rig and speakers mounted above it, all eyes were on the singer who wore some mighty strange, sparkly outfits but still managed to look good. It's a testament to her beauty -- and possibly the amount of bling-bling around her neck -- that she almost pulled off such flashy, off-kilter clothes...Still, from the get-go, the audience was on Twain's side and she could do no wrong as they jumped to their feet and remained there for much of the night....Nearly half of the set list was from her latest album, Up!, although she did throw in plenty of older hits from her juggernaut release, 1997's Come On Over, along with 1995's The Woman In Me, much to the crowd's delight. And every now and then fireworks were set off to accentuate the beginning or ending of a song. Another show-stopping moment saw Twain invite a group of local drummers to march up on to the stage and play alongside her and the band for (If You're Not In It For Love) I'm Outta Here! But really, in the end, it was all about Shania, and the time that the audience got to spend with her.
From the Globe and Mail:

While her nine-piece band introduced themselves, Shania slipped away unnoticed, only to rise from a smoky haze onto an elevated stage, dressed in a gathered black gaucho-style skirt and platform sandals for a spectacular version of “From This Moment”. Later, she appeared 20 rows up in the stands to deliver an intimate rendition of “The Woman in Me”. After more than two hours and multiple costume changes (she closed the show wearing a Hamilton Bulldogs jersey), the concert closed in a cloud of confetti fired from four canons positioned in each corner of the rink

From the Hamilton Spectator:

....It was about this time, maybe 30 minutes into the show, that Twain decided it was time to get intimate. She strutted around the outer rim of the round stage at the centre of the stage, touching every hand that reached for her, signing every book thrust before her, snatching up every bouquet offered. If you were sitting within 15 feet of the stage, Twain made sure you came in contact with her. At times, she even jumped into the crowd, sharing the microphone with an adoring fan.

0309.25-Shania and Second Harvest [STNAOFC]:

CMT Canada, on CMT Central showed a short clip of Shania talking about her favorite charity, America's Second Harvest. Shania talked about growing up hungry.  Shania's support Breakfast for learning helps over half million children in Canada and has provided about 175 million meals.

Shania visiting America's Second Harvest in Chicago:

0309.25-Shania gives 2000 fans a sneak peek [STNAOFC]:

The tickets read "Dress Rehearsal." And last night they gave about 2,000 lucky Hamilton fans the Shania Twain concert they never expected.
A night before launching her world tour here, Twain let a select few inside Copps Coliseum for the sneak peak of a lifetime. Some with very little notice. While Twain's camp was mum, Copps staff say she gave about 2,000 tickets to the United Way and its agencies. Fans included kids from Living Rock, Kiwanis volunteers, inner-city students.
"Every concert, I do this all throughout the year. I raise money and awareness to help hungry kids," Twain said. Since 1998, when she donated proceeds from her song God Bless the Child to Breakfast for Learning, she has helped raised thousands of dollars for child nutrition in Canada.

0309.25-Want To Know Shania? [Net Music]:

Shania says the best way to know her is through her music.

"I'm writing my own music so it's coming from my heart, I mean it's coming from my own personality, my own perspective, very true to who I really am. And you know, after that you¹ve just got to hope that the fans like it," she reasons. "And what is intentional with my music though, is that I do make it for the fans. I want the fans to relate to my music, that¹s why I make it. My songs are like personal letters to the audience," she explains.
Keep writing those letters Shania!!! We love listening to them!!

0309.25-"There will be a lot of surprises," [Canoe]:

As Shania talks about her latest tour:

Twain says she just wants to be close to her fans. "With this tour, people will be as close to the stage as possible, with as few barriers," she says. "It's going to be interesting." And audience participation will figure prominently. "Absolutely," says Twain. "I always include the audience. It's just the way I perform. The audience is my show. I feed off them entirely."  Twain describes the stage, designed by Mark Fisher (Rolling Stones, U2, Pink Floyd), as twice the production she had last time. "I knew I wanted to do it bigger than the last time, and I guess for fun too," she says. "The more ideas you can come up with, and the more things you can experiment with, the more fun it is. And it's 'play time' in a sense, putting a show together. It's like building a house. You're going to live in it for a year.'"  Despite the album's title, she won't be airborne a la Celine Dion in Las Vegas. "I'm not flying through the air or anything like that," she says. "But it will be physically demanding and it's a big stage and there's lots of songs. It's a long show for one person." In other words, expect lots of bells and whistles. "There will be a lot of surprises," Twain says. "Lots of pyro. Great lighting, like I mean super, super-duper lighting, which I think is such a big part of it, especially being in the centre. It's going to look so beautiful."

0309.25-Shania! [National Post]:

On the Eve of launching her world tour, Shania sat down with a reporter from the National Post and talked about her music, her fans, and life on the road.

The Tour:

"Touring's great fun. It's tiring. [But] as long as you get enough rest, it's fun. If you let yourself get burned out, then it's stressful. That happened to me a few times on the last tour, but I never had to miss a show. And it was never a big deal," she says. "It's actually a fun environment. It's a whole new vibe for a period of time. And you've got this world that moves around with you."
Does Shania feel any pressure to re-invent herself?

"I guess I don't really plan it that much -- I've never really given it that much thought. I don't look at it that much, just because I don't have that knack. I get excited by the fact that I don't know. And it's a whole new fresh start every time I go to do something," Shania! says.
"I love change, but I don't feel the pressure to reinvent myself. And I don't know what I'm going to do next. I don't know what songs I'm going to write next. And it's all part of the beauty of it. It's all part of the exploration of it. You're creating your own way as you go."

How do you get to know Shania?
"I think the one department I lucked out in is that I relate very well to people one-on-one and with the audience, through my music," she says of her popularity. "For some reason, the personality gets through the music and they really get to know the person. And they really make that contact. That's what they tell me. So that's what I have to conclude. It's just me. And they really have gotten to know me." "There's not really that much more to know, you know? I don't have a deep dark past, I don't have any drug problems, I don't have anything that I'm hiding. I'm pretty much what you see is what you get," she says. "There's different sides to that, but I think everyone has seen all that now. They've seen pretty much everything that I am. They know who I am. They know me now."
So, is it an act?
"All the songs I record, of course, are all coming from me. They're all very personal," she says when her Rolling Stone revelations are brought up. "But the ones that I don't record -- what people have to understand is they're not really songs. They're just ideas. It's like a musical diary that I have that I just don't want to develop. Mutt [Lange, her husband/producer] sometimes goes in and pulls something out of it, but it's really hard for me to let him do it, because it's such a personal thing.
"There's a lot of stuff that I won't ever [release]. Not for any secretive reason."

0309.24-Variety is the "spice"  [CountryStars]:

Shania Twain's album UP!, has already passed 9 million copies sold worldwide, and she says the spice that drives fans to the stores is variety.
"Just the variety," Shania affirms. "I think the fans themselves were the inspiration because you know, if you come to one of my shows you'll see the audience is so diverse. There's every age group, every type of person; old, young, small, small children, teenagers, parents, guys, girls, it's very mixed."
Because of that Shania says she's totally free to put a diverse mix of tunes on her album.
"In talking to the fans over the years I've learned that they all seem to like my music for different reasons. Some people love the uptempo stuff, others are more into the ballads, and I realize I have a lot of different types of audiences to make music for. And so it sort of gave me the freedom to explore my own versatility, dig back to my roots, which happens to be a bit of everything, and make an album for all the fans that I have. So it just made it very interesting and fun. And that's also the reason why there are so many songs on the CD," Twain concludes.

0309.24-Keep Up! with Shania and the Falls:

Brent Barcus will be keeping a journal of his travels as he tours with Shania on her Up! worldwide tour. Here is a preview:

Countdown to Shania's First Show!
We just finished another long day of rehearsals for the upcoming Shania Twain Up! Tour this fall. There's so much behind the scenes prep to put a tour of this size together. It "takes a village" of people who live and work together very closely to put on a show of this magnitude. I think we're close to 90 employees at this point. Twelve semis of equipment and 10 buses to cart us chumps around.
The last 9 days or so have been grueling going over and over the songs. We've pulling 12-hour days, refining the music and putting together the right set list. The stage is now in place and it is quite a site to behold. Really modern and cool.
It's the countdown to showtime so we're running the set at least three times a day. Every song is very choreographed and there is a lot to remember. We might have 2 or 3 cues per song. We have an extraordinary crew who helps us musicians out between each song changing instruments. I'll feature them more in a later journal.
The lighting crew is perfecting all cues on stage for solos and special features. It's all timed perfectly with computers. This is the most hi tech show I've ever been a part of.
We've been here almost two weeks working virtually nonstop ... but we did manage to break out of here last week for a game of hockey. Shania was generous to hook us all up with new hockey gear (score!) and we all trekked over to the nearest ice rink ... and hit the ice. It turned into a family affair, with Randall's daughter, Sophie in a pair of skates, as well as little Eja

0309.22-Emerson Drive to tour with Twain [CountryStars]:

Emerson Drive already had a high opinion of their countrywoman, Shania Twain, before she invited them to open some of her Canadian dates on her upcoming World Tour. "Shania Twain, she's really one of those artists that's affected everybody in the world," says the group. "She opened the door for a new style of country music and for us being a little more edgy than everybody else, she really helped us and she was a big influence for a lot of people."

DETAILS - Emerson Drive will open the first four Canadian dates of Shania Twain's UP! Tour: Sept. 25 in Hamilton, Sept. 27 in Kanata and Oct. 2-3 in Toronto.

0309.22-Putting Up! together  [CountryStars]:

It was over 3 years between Shania's COME ON OVER CD and her new one, UP!, so why the long delay? Shania says it comes down to a pursuit of quality.
"Yeah, it does take time to put together I think a good quality record," she says. "(It takes) more time for me, I think because I write my own music, so you know, of course it's just more time consuming. And then you know, all the studio time. MUTT is just very, he's a perfectionist and very creative guy so the whole process takes quite a long time. And then we had a baby of course amongst all of that, so it ended up being about 3 1/2 years."

Shania talked with the Hamilton Spectator while preparing for her upcoming tour. In an article By Graham Rockingham, Shania discusses life on the road with the family, her tour, her snub at the CMA, and Johnny Cash.

Shania Twain: Home is Hamilton while she prepares for world tour show.
Shania Twain is sitting cross-legged in a tiny curtained cubicle of a room on a big black comfy chair, her brown hair threaded through the back of a ballcap. T-shirt, denim jacket and jeans.
A scented candle burns on a table beside her, masking the kitchen aromas filling the Copps Coliseum basement. Twain and her crew have their own private catering outfit from England working the arena. The company is called Eat Your Hearts Out. Today's luncheon special, seafood linguine, seems to permeate everything.

She's really quite petite, 5-foot-3 to be exact. The makeup is minimal, subdued. Charming. Sweet. It's hard to believe this 38-year-old woman has sold more than 60 million records during her 10 years in the recording business.

Her German shepherd Tim lies on the floor. ("Don't try to pet the dog, or even make eye contact with him," her publicity handler advises reporters.) A second German shepherd is roaming the halls.

Twain is relaxed and smiling despite working through five interviews in a row. Members of her nine-piece band are waiting for her about 50 feet away where they've set up a makeshift rehearsal area at the foot of the escalators.

Inside the rink, workers are busy setting up scaffolding above the round stage that will be Twain's home for most of the next year. She arrived in town mid-week and is trying to get the promotional stuff out of the way before rehearsals for her world tour begins in earnest. She'll be here for another two weeks before the tour kicks off with a sold-out show Sept. 25 at Copps. Exactly where she's staying is a forbidden topic, but it's nearby. Her days are long enough without adding a commute. She needs to be close to her son Eja, who just turned two last month.

"I don't want to be too far away," she says near the start of a wide-ranging interview about the tour, life as a Nashville outsider, Johnny Cash, free speech, shopping, her fans and the power of celebrity.

"I haven't had a chance to get around," she says about her time in Hamilton. "I've been pretty much locked in here the whole time. No sightseeing. Any spare time that I have, I spend with my family."

Twain and her husband Robert 'Mutt' Lange -- who have a permanent 100-room residence in Switzerland -- decided to start her tour in Hamilton for a number of reasons. It had to be in Ontario, because it still feels like home (she's a Timmins native). She needed rehearsal space and Copps was available. Besides, it's not Toronto.

"There's a nice sense of familiarity in Ontario, and Hamilton's a great place to do it," she says. "It's quieter than Toronto. It's a great location."

Gone are the days when Twain could just walk down the street without drawing a crowd. She found that out last week when she ventured into Toronto's Yorkville shopping district.

"When I went shopping that day in Toronto, people were out there with cameras, and we just said, 'OK, when we come out I'll be happy to pose for a picture for you. Then would you mind if I carried on quietly without you.'" The cameramen did their duty and then left without a fight.

Now that the stage has arrived its unlikely she'll have time for anymore shopping expeditions. Twain sums up her routine for the next two weeks succinctly.

"I spend the mornings with my son and then I come to rehearsal," she says. "Then I have lunch, rehearse in the afternoon and have dinner with my son. Then I put my child to bed. And then I have an evening rehearsal. It's a long day. I leave around 11:30 every night."

It doesn't take long to realize that this woman is in total control. Ask her how involved she is in the details, the design of the stage, for example.

"It's like building your own house," she says. "You're there designing everything you want. You pick out your own details. Oh, yes, I'm very, very involved ... I'm in there everyday seeing what's going on. I'm in on all the decisions. There are no decisions made without me. It's a very personal thing. I'm going to live on that stage for the next year or so. I'm a big part of the creation, of the design."

She's well aware of the pitfalls of a centre stage. It can be a distraction trying to follow a group like the Dixie Chicks around a large stage. Shania wants maximum fan contact.

"People are going to be able to touch the stage," she says. "There's not going to be any barrier."

The fans, Twain says, are everything. It's a concept she's given up trying to explain to the industry types in Nashville, where she remains an outsider. Despite the fact that her current album Up! has stayed near the top of the charts for the past 10 months, despite the fact that she is now the most popular female recording star in the history of the business, Twain received no nominations for the
upcoming Country Music Awards in Nashville.

"I've been in this business long enough to know that it's not about how much the fans like you," Twain says. "It's got nothing to do with that. It doesn't matter how well your album is doing. These are just a very small group of people who decide who they want to represent their show. It's as simple as that. I've never really had a shoe in there. I'm Canadian. I'm not traditional ... Everyone is always asking me for the formula. There's no formula to success. I make music for the people, for the fans."

It's that outsider image that made her relate to Johnny Cash, the legendary country star who died yesterday. Twain had received news of Cash's death yesterday morning. She never had a chance to meet him.

"But he was definitely one of those outsiders, too," she says. "He was everything, gospel, country, rock. He was his own man. I feel like a part of my own musical history has been stamped somehow (by him)."

It's that wide variety of musical influences that Twain believes has made her difficult to fit record company niches. But it's also part of the secret to her success. Her music cuts across generations. What other artist would pack her albums with two versions of each song, as she did with Up? The red CD contains the pop/rock versions. The green one contains the banjos, the dobros, the down-home, country feel.

Twain is acutely aware of the power of her celebrity. Her fans hang on every word. They follow every change of clothing (there will likely be four during each of her two-hour concerts). Twain is highly involved in charity. Net proceeds from a new line of Shania Red lipstick are going entirely to the American Heart F
oundation. But she's careful to stay out of politics.

"I personally made a decision never to talk in public about religion and politics," she says. "If you want to make it public then go stand in line with the rest of the voters."
Military Appreciation Image

Twain is not sure about the wisdom of Dixie Chick Natalie Maines's comments condemning President George Bush and the war in Iraq.

"I don't like war. I don't think anybody likes war," she says. "But at the same time, if you speak out you run the risk of offending somebody. What about the people who have sons and daughters over there fighting and they hear you say that?"

Yet she defends Maines's right to say what she thinks.

"That is the very unfortunate thing about what happened," Twain says. "Now people are almost saying, 'You guys don't have a say.' Well of course we have a say. We're like everybody else. But you have to choose very carefully which forum and how you say it."

Twain's thoughts soon return to the stage.

"We get on the stage, I think tomorrow night," she says, looking forward to the gruelling rehearsal schedule. "We'll run two or three shows a day."

0309.12-Twain on Thanksgiving [Country Nation]:

According to a story on Country Nation, Shania will air her next TV Special on NBC this Thanksgiving. This will be Shania's second special on that holiday. Her last Thanksgiving Day special got her highest ratings ever. Westwood One News, quoting well-placed sources, is reporting that Shania Twain’s second NBC special will air on November 25th, and that it will be taped in NYC in early November.
Reportedly, Shania will perform in front of an intimate crowd of "500 or so people," with the aim of capturing the feel of the Elvis Presley "’68 Comeback Special."

0309.11-Shania on Oprah [OFC]:

Shania will perform her new single "She's Not Just a Pretty Face" -- as well as "Coat of Many Colors" with Dolly Parton.  Date to be determined.

0309.11-Shania's opening act [CountryStars]:

Mercury Records new artist James Otto, whose current single "Days Of Our Lives" is one of this week's R&R Top 5 Most Added singles, has just been confirmed to open for all of Shania Twain's US dates this fall. Otto will be performing acoustically in-the-round before the megastar hits the stage. Look for more Shania tour dates to be announced today.

Shania's tour kicks off September 25th in Hamilton, Canada. OTTO appears first in the U.S. Sept. 29th in Pittsburgh, PA.

0309.11-Shania promises "Best show yet!" [CountryStars]:

"This will be my best show yet. I'm putting a lot of time and effort into the stage design, just everything," Shania brags.
"The lights, the pyro(technics), the whole production o
f it's going to be really exciting so.. I'm trying to come up with all kinds of new, fresh ideas that nobody's seen before and just make it as exciting as possible. Of course it's going to be high energy and very, very audience friendly. I always like to draw the audience in and make them a part of the whole show, so it's just a lot of what I'm like communication. It's just going to be great, I'm looking really, really forward to it."

0309.11-All the worlds her stage [Canoe]:

Shania is preparing for her world tour in Hamilton, Canada. In two weeks Shania will launch her latest tour in support of her new album Up!. So, what will be different this time around: "The last time it was very, very, very different," said Twain.  "We've already, musically, pretty much done most of our rehearsing because we just did the television special.
"Of course, it's the same band so we're not starting from scratch with the songs.  "So (the) two weeks -- it's more production rehearsal. Because the production, of course, is completely different from the special. So the whole two weeks is pretty much just spent on that." As of yesterday, the stage had yet to arrive. But Twain's stage designer this time out is A-lister Mark Fisher (Rolling Stones, U2, Pink Floyd), whom she talked with at great length in London about her "in the round" setting. The two also "spent a ton of time on the phone and e-mail," said Twain.  "The main thing that I wanted to do was have access to the audience as much as possible," she said. "The design of the stage is interesting. There's a lot of ramps and stuff. But the crew and everybody are on the stage. It's like a ship. And no one can leave. Once the show starts, we're all there for the rest of the night."
Shania will also sport a different look on stage. Shania plans on four costume changes during the show. Twain also plans to make four costume changes with the clothes chosen by her but not designed by longtime collaborator Mark Bouwer. "I'm going in a very different direction. I'm doing more sportier. Not to say that none of the clothes will be designer. But it will all be put together by me."

0309.11-See Shania back in 1993

Back in 1993 when Shania was just starting her career in Nashville she sang back up vocals on Sammy Kershaw's "Haunted Heart", and she appeared in  Tracey Lawrence's "A Second Home" video. Toby Kieth is in the video as well.

0309.10-Among Friends [CountryStars]:

Shania Twain says that songwriting is her passion, but appearing before a live audience is her favorite thing, like visiting with friends.
"I mean song writing is definitely where my passion is, that is something that I would do regardless, even if I hadn't made this my career. I would, I just enjoy song writing.
But of course being on stage is the most rewarding because you've got... it's like being with your friends and you're all just sitting around talking about the same things and sharing the same laugh. You have so much in common because you're there for the music and you all know the music so well, so it's just a really special experience."

0309.10-Finding new talent [CountryStars]:

Although Shania has put a new show together for her latest tour, one carry over from her hugely successful "Come On Over Tour" is finding and showcasing local talent. "Yeah, that's great fun. I always like to feature amateur talent and give people a chance to get up there and see what it's really like on the big stage and what they might be in for in real life if they were to pursue it. Or just even a chance to get discovered by somebody."

0309.10-"Face Time" [CountryNow]:

"She's Not Just a Pretty Face" will be Shania Twain's next single, according to Mercury Nashville. Meanwhile, a Billboard Airplay Monitor poll of country music and program directors reveals that SHANIA TWAIN and Martina McBride are tied at the top of the list of core female artists. 0309.08-...and the winner  is...SHANIA TWAIN!!

The results of the CCMAs are in. Shania Twain picked up  4 awards, she won in the following categories:

Female Vocalist

CMT Video of the Year for "I'm Gonna Getcha Good!"

Album of the Year

Top Selling Album of the Year

Shania also inducted Sylvia Tyson into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame. The funniest moments at tonight's award show:

Each nominee was introduced by the host with a song parody. Another funny moment occurred when Sylvia came on stage and told Shania "I promise I won't kiss you." a reference to the VMA- Madonna / Britney kiss, but the reference went over Shania's head. Shania gave Sylvia a hug.  Then, when Shania accepted the female vocalist award, Shania brought up a list, which happened to be little sister's shopping list...lol

CONGRATULATIONS SHANIA!!!!!!

Also CONGRATULATIONS to Cory Churko, for winning best fiddle player!!!

More Shania quotes from the show.....[Ottawa]

Shania Twain, nominated eight times in seven categories, picked up honours for best female artist, video, album and top-selling international album for Up! "I really don't feel deserving of this," said the native of Timmins, Ont., who has now collected 23 CCMAs in her career. "I never dreamed that I'd ever be here. It seems so many great things have happened to me over the years, I just want to say thank you." ....
Twain, who now lives a Swiss mansion with her producer husband Mutt Lange, paid tribute to the talents of the other nominees. .....
"There is so much humility in this room tonight - there don't seem to be any airs and I love it," she said. "There is so much talent here and I'm so proud." .......Twain's Up, which has sold more than a million copies in Canada alone, has been an international sensation. It was the first album in five years for Twain, who retreated from the limelight to have a baby after the phenomenal success of Come On Over, which sold 35 million copies worldwide. Twain presented a lifetime achievement award to folk legend Sylvia Tyson, noting that her songwriting abilities paved the way for other Canadian women. "Thank you, Shania, I promise not to kiss you," said Tyson, referring to the open-mouthed liplock between Madonna and Britany Spears at the recent MTV awards.

0309.08-Sylvia Tyson: Shania Impresses her [Canoe]:

On tonight's CCMA Awards, Shania will be inducting Sylvia Tyson into the Hall of Fame. Sylvia talked about Shania.....

Tyson expressed gratitude towards the CCMA and said she was pleased superstar Shania Twain would be presenting her with the award tonight.   "We've not met, but I was very flattered that not only would she do it but that she would come all the way here to do it," said Tyson.  "I think she's a really good singer and songwriter. I really admire the way she sidestepped the whole Nashville country machine and basically just did it."

0309.08-Single Correction, no Nah! [CountryStars]:

CountryStars.com posts a correction to their story on Friday...

Last week we quoted www.shania.com, a Shania-friendly, but not official, Shania site, saying her next single would be "Nah." Turns out, according to her label, her next single is to be "SHE'S NOT A PRETTY FACE."  Shania's label states that her only official sites are www.shaniatwain.com and www.shania-twain.com (the label site).

0309.06-Eja's favorite song, next single [CountryStars]:

According to Shania, Eja's favorite song from Up! is Nah!. Eja loves the Nah na na na part. It is also Shania's next single. No date has  been announced for the release.

0309.06-Shania talks pets [Yahoo]:

As we all know, Shania has three dogs, and a lot of horses. Shania was asked about adopting a homeless pet. Shania says Celebrities speak out on why adopting a homeless pet is a rewarding experience for everyone involved.

"Animals make a wonderful gift. Don't love them and leave them and they will love you unconditionally forever and for always."

0309.05-"When You Kiss Me" [Country Stars]:

What is the secret to Shania's marriage?

Shania Twain tells us her marriage to writer/producer, Mutt Lange, is a success because they have so much in common. They both love making music, they have similar tastes in music and life-style, they have a zillion dollars between them, so there's no money problem, they have a wonderful young baby together, plus they are madly in love with each other.

0309.04-"Kiss This!" [CountryNation]:

Shania Twain has partnered with BeneFit Cosmetics and Glamour magazine to create the new lipstick, "Shania Red." All net proceeds from the sale of the lipstick will be given to the American Heart Association.
Shania picked her favorite shade of red to be the Shania Red lipstick, a sweetheart sheer red color. $14 at Sephora stores and benefitcosmetics.com.
Shania will be on the cover of the October issue of Glamour -- and I assume the CMA knows where to kiss it.

GREAT MENTION COUNTRYNATION!!!

0309.04-More about the Fan Con at the STC [STC]:

"Shania's fans hold near and dear to their hearts what Shania does," says Tracy Hautanen, Customer Service Manager, Shania Twain Centre. To prove they do, the fans who took part in the World Wide Shania Twain Fan Club Convention collected money for the South Porcupine - Porcupine Food Bank.
On the night of the banquet dinner at the McIntyre restaurant, fans collected $310.42 Canadian and $70.00 American.
The fans said they made the donation in honour of the Shania Twain Centre Staff for all the hard work and preparation involved to organize the first ever event.

The woman from the magazine mention that Shania's grandmother died form the disease. You can purchase lipstick (that Shania as on) and a pin to support the disease.

0309.03-In her Jeep? [Starlocity]:

It is being reported that Chrysler Jeep is showing some interest in Shania's song "In My Car" for possible use in its advertising campaign for their Jeep vehicles.

First it was Celine Dion who "Drove All Night" to promote US car company Chrysler. Then Madonna pocketed £1 million for a role in a BMW commercial. Now Music Insider NinetyNine tells us that Chrysler's Jeep division may well be about to chase Canadian diva Shania Twain, to help sell their wheels.
It is one of Twain's catchy, up-beat tracks that has reportedly caught the attention of advertisers. Her current album "Up!" contains the fun and empowering tune, "In My Car, I'll Be The Driver!". Twain sings:
"You can choose the channel when we're watchin' the TV. Oh, babe it's okay. And you can pick the flavor when we're orderin' ice cream - I don't mind! Yeah, that's fine, I'd do anything for you - But in my car I'll be the driver! In my car I'm in control! In my car I come alive.. and in my car I am the driver. Watch me now!"
The Shania details are yet to be officially confirmed, but we think that "I'm On My Way!" (or Shania, in Ojibway Indian) would be the best slogan to accompany such a promotion - if Jeep were to give it the green light.

0309.01-For Shania, things are Up! [Starlocity]

To say that things are going very well for Shania Twain at the moment is an understatement. The Canadian beauty's current opus, "Up!" is fast approaching sales of 10 million copies worldwide. In Europe, the latest track to be lifted from the album is "Thank You Baby! (For Makin' Someday Come So Soon)", whilst in the USA, Mercury is gearing up to release the catchy "Nah!". Twain will begin her "Up!" tour in the USA in September. 20 dates have currently been announced. In the new year, the tour will extend to South America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. Twain will bring husband "Mutt" Lange and their 2-year-old son Eja on the road with her.

0309.01-Shania deserves better [Country Nation]:

Reaction to the CMA nominations continues. The latest site to react to Shania not being nominated for any awards is countrynation.com.

Up/Down
-- Up: Shania Twain's recent NBC special has pushed her album, "Up!"... well, up. A jump of 15 notches -- along with a 70% increase in sales to No. 19 on the Billboard 200. The show drew 8.9 million viewers and ranked 21st among the week's TV programs.
Down: Despite her continued success, Shania got the big CMA Awards nomination-door slammed in her face last week. Yet, when the CMA wants to put a better face on country music sales, they're sure quick to include her huge numbers. Sad. She deserves better treatment.
